NCMEC Releases New Tools on Safer Internet Day
Today NCMEC is releasing new tip sheets for parents and educators on generative artificial intelligence (GAI) as well as a new episode of “Into the Cloud™,” its animated online safety series. These resources address emerging digital threats to children in time for Safer Internet Day.
You may be wondering: What is GAI? How can it impact my child and family?
GAI enables users to create images, videos, audio and text based on prompts. While this technology has many positive applications, NCMEC is deeply concerned about its role in generating child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and other exploitative content. Some images are created using “nudify” apps, which can be used to bully and harass victims. Additionally, GAI-generated images are increasingly being used in sextortion schemes, where offenders blackmail children for money or coerce them into providing more explicit content or engaging in sexual activity.
Over the past two years, NCMEC’s CyberTipline has received more than 7,000 reports of suspected child sexual exploitation involving GAI—a number expected to rise as offenders become more adept at misusing this technology.
A new tip sheet for parents and caregivers, as well as a tip sheet for educators, are now available to download here, under “Resources,” with educational insights and conversation starters to help families discuss online safety.
Empowering Kids Through Education
Education is one of the most powerful tools in preventing online exploitation. NCMEC’s NetSmartz program offers interactive resources, games, animated videos and lesson plans designed to help children recognize and navigate online risks.
“Into the Cloud,” NCMEC’s flagship online safety animation series, presents serious topics in a way that is easy for kids of all ages to understand. This Safer Internet Day, NCMEC is releasing the first episode in season three of the series, titled “GOTCHA!,” which teaches kids how to recognize and respond to online threats.
NCMEC urges parents, caregivers, and educators to stay informed about the risks of GAI exploitation and take proactive steps to protect children. By fostering open discussions and using available resources, we can create a safer digital environment for all children.
